The Difference Between Roofing Materials

In a way, roofing is like a helmet for your home. It is what shields your interior from outside damage – protecting you and your family from the likes of wind, rain, snow, and other potential hazards.

That’s why, for homeowners, it is important to know what your roof is made of, and as such, how your roof performs. This can make you both knowledgeable and prepared in the case of emergency, or when maintenance is needed. Simply put – the more you understand your roof the better.

If you are a homeowner interested in the different types of roofing materials out there, including their advantages and disadvantages, keep reading below for more information!

Common Roofing Types

  • Asphalt Shingle Roofing

Possibly the most accessible roofing material on the market, asphalt shingle is used widely by homeowners and contractors across the United States. Its popularity is due to a number of benefits that it brings to the table.

Pros: Asphalt shingles are a cost-effective and economical option. They are also incredibly versatile, coming in a plethora of different styles, colors, and finishes.

Cons: Asphalt shingles are not known for being the most durable roofing material out there. The quality of your asphalt shingle roof can definitely vary.

  • Clay Tile Roofing

Another option that excels in the aesthetic department, clay tile roofing is most commonly associated with Southwestern or Spanish-style homes. Clay tiles certainly add an extra layer of class and sophistication to any roofing system.

Pros: Clay tiles have longevity and make for an excellent decoration to your roof.

Cons: Clay tiles aren’t particularly known for being cost-effective or affordable.

  • Metal Roofing

Behold metal roofing – it is impressively durable and can keep you and your family protected year after year. If installed properly and with the right materials, you can enjoy a metal roof on your home for up to 60 or 70 years! Many homeowners continue to choose metal roofing for its excellent durability.

Pros: Durability! Metal roofing lasts longer than most other materials out there.

Cons: Like clay tile roofing, metal roofing isn’t known for being very affordable. In fact, installing metal roofing can be on the expensive side.

  • Slate

Alongside metal roofing, slate is another heavyweight when it comes to performance. In addition to this, it is also aesthetically appealing, providing a unique look to your home.

Pros: Slate roofs are definitely durable, and can look amazing!

Cons: Slate roofs are not very budget-friendly, and can be pricey to install.
