Tips about choosing doors!

When you begin the search for exterior doors ask yourself a few questions.

What door are you replacing? Is this going to be your front entrance door? If so, what look are you going for? Is the aesthetic appeal of the door the most important factor or are you looking to purchase based on the safety of the door?

Modern technology allows home owners to purchase doors that are not only extremely safe, but aesthetically appealing also. The entry door market is mainly comprised of three materials: Wood, Steel and Fiberglass. Increasingly popular composite doors are replacing the once popular wood doors. Steel and Fiberglass doors can be designed to achieve the look of wood, but are an infinitely more durable material.

The best way to approach making decisions about your door is to work off of your vision and your budget. When using a custom door supplier, you will have many options in perfecting your vision and you can tweak these options to fit your financial goals.

When selecting the type of door you want, decide whether you are looking for a paneled or flushed door. Flush doors are smooth on both sides of the door. Paneled doors are just that; they have rectangular panels on each side of the door. Many wood doors must be paneled to help give the wood the freedom to shift with temperature and weather changes as the wood ages. Often referred to as Doorlites, glass panes within the door can be used in place of panels for a more decorative touch.

All of these options are available in wood and composite doors. Decorative glass, wood frames, specific handles, colors and other options will be available when you choose your custom door.

Lastly, before you choose your door, think about the pros and cons with each type of material. Wood bows, splits, cracks and warps. Steel can rust. Be sure to ask if the manufacturer of your wood or steel door guarantees their product against such problems that can arise with these types of doors. Fiberglass and Steel doors insulate 3 to 5 times better than wood doors; they not only save on energy costs for your home but are also much easier to care for.

Keep these tips in mind when shopping around for your next entry door! Don’t just settle for the cheapest price or prettiest finish. Do your homework and the choice will be easy.
